Big Inspo from the founder of Beyond Yoga, Jodi Guber-Brufsky
Jodi Guber Brufsky grew up in and worked in the Hollywood “biz,” but eventually her heart led her to search for something more. Being a natural helper she ended up teaching yoga and becoming a life coach. Her passion for body positivity, inclusivity, and self-esteem led her to where she is today: Founder and Creative director of Beyond Yoga. Beyond Yoga specializes in body positive silhouettes made in a range of sizes. They believe confidence has little to do with your body size and everything to do with your state of mind. - as told to Meah Cukrov
IATG: Why are you a badass?
Jodi: Because I set out to build a company that supports self-esteem, body positivity and inclusivity and, with Beyond Yoga, I DID IT!
IATG: If you could tell every girl in the world one thing, what would it be?
Jodi: Be unapologetically who you are!
IATG: What’s the mantra you find yourself repeating during a stressful day?
Jodi: This too shall pass.
IATG: Tell us about a girl you admire.
Jodi: I admire any girl who is doing what she loves and going after her dreams. Passion is key!
IATG: What’s your greatest passion?
Jodi: LOVE - authentic, inclusive LOVE. My real passion has always been self-esteem, body positivity and inclusivity and I always thought I would start a foundation, but when I was introduced to the founders of IATG I realized I no longer needed to - they already did it and I can support it!
I love this e.e. cummings quotation:
“To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.”
IATG: How did Beyond Yoga come to be?
Jodi: Growing up in Hollywood as I did I was privy to all kinds of people, pretending to be all kinds of other people or better yet being different versions of themselves depending on the person they were dealing with. The authenticity scale in Hollywood is slightly skewed, to say the least. I’m not saying everyone is inauthentic and not inclusive but it was and still tends to be quite exclusionary based on your job title and how your last movie or tv show performed. That’s a tough road to walk, unless you are at the top. Then it’s great! But be nice to those on your way up, as you will see them on your way down.
Not only did I grow up in Hollywood, but I then proceeded to work in the “biz” and it’s tough. As I navigated this path that turned left and then right, I eventually found myself needing more and I searched and searched. I wasn’t aware of what I was searching for back then, but it is clear to me now that I was searching for connection, happiness, an authentic life. Several career paths later I found myself as a yoga teacher and life coach as helping people was primary to me. But I knew there was more to this story.
I believe in manifesting and I was searching for what was next. So I sat down and looked at my careers and what I loved and took some time to figure out how it all made sense together. And voila - Beyond Yoga. I thought to myself: I love fashion, I love fitness, I love health and wellness, and I love inspiring people to be their best - I looked in the market place and I sat with myself and the idea came to me - yoga inspired active wear for today’s modern woman.
After reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s BIG MAGIC - it was so clear to me that I was the lucky recipient of this idea; I was ready, willing, and waiting and I acted on it. She believes that ideas come to you and if you don’t act on it then they move on to someone else, which is why more than one person can have the same idea. 13 years later we are at the forefront of this movement - not jumping on a bandwagon. We are the bandwagon.
